About

About // MICHAEL TSO // Hydrologist/ Geophysicist/ Engineer

I am a RA data scientist at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Lancaster since April 2019. My role at UKCEH focuses on developing machine learning and statistical methods that are suitable for a wide range of envrionmental applications. I am familiar with many aspects of environmental data and the unique challenges they present (e.g. data workflow, QA/QC, gridded data, coupled modelling uncertainty propagation, quantification). I am interested in improving collaborative research, stakeholder engagement, and cloud computing for environmental research. My research mainly utilizes long-term environmental monitoring data (e.g. ECN,PBMS) in the UK. I am affiliated with the Centre of Excellence for Envrionmental Data Science and the Data Science for the Natural Environment project.

Previously, I was a PhD student at Lancaster University, United Kingdom, working with Prof. Andrew Binley on hydrogeophysics. My PhD project is affiliated with Dr. Oliver Kuras from the geophysical tomography team at the British Geological Survey. I spent two months of my PhD visiting Dr. Tim Johnson at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (USA). Prior to my doctoral research, I worked with Prof. Jim Yeh on hydraulic tomography and obtained an MS from the University of Arizona in the USA.

I am a hydrologist and geophysicist by background with specific interests in the impacts of soil moisture and contaminant transport. I also have an interest in understanding and quantifying uncertainty in numerical models, for example, how to quantify uncertainty in geophysical images (which is currently a computational challenge) and how to better use geophysical data to answer hydrological questions.

My research interests include:

  • Environmental data science
  • Sensor networks
  • Aquifer characterization
  • Geophysical monitoring of subsurface fluid migration
  • Data assimilation (multiple data types, snapshots etc.)
  • Time series analysis
  • Geostatistics
  • Petrophysics
  • Recharge and vadose zone processes
  • Groundwater modelling
  • Uncertainty quantification

For more information see my complete curriculum vitae and a list of scientific publications. Feel free to contact me if you'd like to chat.

I have served as a reviewer for:
